After being fed up with K's, I scoured around for other places. Go here. End of story. When I'm in the area, I'm usually am driving through Buena Vista after a full day of hiking and eating trail food, imagining an awesome brunch. This is that place. I got the Mr. Ed, which is biscuits, gravy, eggs, all over hash browns (good hash browns to boot), covered (smothered is a better word choice) in green chili. It was served on a very large plate, and it towered above the plate. I was feeling full before I was half-way through. Completely full before I reached 2/3rd's. Best post hike brunch that satiated me, hands down. Coming from a guy who spends the hours hiking back down off the mountain thinking of elaborate brunches, this is saying something Wish the coffee was better though, I was on the tail end of a 5 hour drive back and needed a pick me up. That's probably on me though for showing up in the evening. Same price as K's, much better, much more filling, and the food gets to the table faster.

Absolutely horrible, took an hour to get all our drinks another 30 minutes to get the food that was not cooked all the way. The two meat breakfast burritos had raw eggs in them, the gravy that was on the biscuits tasted like spoiled milk, the blueberries in the pancakes were hard, an they didn't even bring out all our food. Didn't try any of the Asian food. The one guy that was helping was a nice guy but was running the hole show. All the Asians that were working their didn't do much of anything, kinda felt bad for him. I will never go back their again.

BOOOOO!!!! I write this review with a heavy heart. The legendary Gunsmoke Cafe, the funny little diner with the random hand-made clocks and trucker artwork on the walls, that serves the famous Mr. Ed and GIGANTIC cinnamon rolls.... is gone. Well, it's THERE, technically, but now the sign has been painted over and when I arrived after a long hike up Princeton, I squinted as I read... "asian food"...????? WTF?!?!? I quickly unbuckled my seatbelt and ran out, leaving the car running and the door left ajar. I bolted through the flimsy screen door and into the diner. I looked around. To my horror, the clocks and artwork were gone, leaving nothing but bare walls. The diner bar was empty. Not a single trucker to be seen drinking a hot coffee. Just two sad souls in the back corner, a slightly overweight man and woman who are clearly visiting from Kansas, or something. And then an Asian woman appears. I grabbed her by her shirt collar and inches from her face I asked... begged... "I'll take a Mr. Ed!". "NO MISTER ED! WE ASIAN FOOD ONLY!" In a desperate attempt to save my day I grabbed her even tighter than before and shook her: "How about one of those giant cinnamon rolls?!?!?!? Surely you didn't get rid of the cinnamon rolls!!!" She shook free and slapped a menu to my chest and repeated herself with a firm tone: "CINNAMON ROLL NOT ASIAN". I looked at the menu as tears streamed down my face.... Rice. Stir Fry. Kale??? The menu fell from my hands and I walked back out to the parking lot but my emotions got the best of me as I fell to my knees and looked to the sky and cursed. "WHYYYYYYY" The Gunsmoke is gone, people. It's gone.

Don't let the back-of-a-truck-stop location fool you, they have a well-prepared menu with good execution and friendly service around a brunchy menu with local ingredients. It's a bit pricey for the location, but you get the feeling your money goes into the food.

So this place is closed? There's an 8x11 paper on the door that says, "new menu! new chef!" It didn't indicate when it will open again.

Ate a late lunch here on the recommendations of others. It must have changed management, because it is now an Asian / breakfast place. We tried both and both were mediocre at best. The ambiance is also minimal. Cannot recommend.

After 10 hours of hiking in spring slush on Mt. Columbia, I wanted some eggs. No, beyond that. Needed them. Desperately. Voraciously. Thank you, Yelp, for directing me to this delicious, homie breakfast-at-7pm red shack. While my order was being freshly prepared, I nearly passed out on their super comfy sofa; sadly, I had to relocated to devour my feast. I filled up on the absolutely amazing veggie omelet which seemed to be packed with all sorts of random mysterious ingredients that were an amazing blend of awesome and omg-yes-refuel-energy. And, oh my, hashbrowns. Every post-hike indulgence ought to include those beasts! The kind lady sent me on my way back to Denver with a smile, a few cards for friends, and a failed attempt to wish me good luck in molecular biology. I will defffffinitely be back.

Stopped here after drive in from Colorado Springs. Knew we were in trouble when they told us their cook was not in. Order was botched after waiting over 1 hour to eat. And still not everyoe in our party of 5 got served. There was no taste of the food -bland! Rolled out of there poor $60 for breakfast and hoping we would not get sick. Stay away and drive further into city!

Next time I'm in the middle of nowhere, driving for 6 hours, looking for breakfast, I can only dream of coming across a place like this. We had been on the road since 5:30am, and were pretty hungry for a great breakfast. We come to the next town, Buena Vista, and find the "Gunsmoke" on a recommendation from the person at the gas station. Well, it just so happened to be Rick's birthday (a local Buena Vistan) and his mom had brought him a cake from the lady who owns the sewing shop in town. They were sitting in a booth enjoying each other's company, and we walked in and were immediately offered a piece. It was chocolate w/ coconut and some other stuff, it was amazing. Anyway, we order, and I get the best breakfast I've ever had... chicken fried steak, hash-browns, eggs, wow. I mean, yeah I've had this stuff elsewhere, but I think when you have a truck stop in the middle of Colorado, you cook things like this a little differently. It made me wish I was a trucker who's regular route went through Buena Vista. It was that good. I've you're ever near here, please go. I beg you! It is awesome! Plus they have video games and a convenience store connected! Everything you need and more, right when you need it!

It doesn't look like much, but the Gunsmoke Cafe is absolutely delicious. It's hidden away behind a gas station - it took us a minute to find it - the place is pretty modest. The food was great. Try the Mr. Ed and/or the Buffalo Burger. You won't regret it.

Andrea, your review doesn't say where the Global Garage or Mothers Bistro are but I'll bet they are in Buena Vista. I drove by the Gunsmoke many years before I finally stopped in for a cup of coffee because I was too tired to drive out of my way to Bongo Billy's. For anyone making the trip from Denver and back, going to BV isn't practical if you are headed south or back to Denver from the Salida area. There are several bar/grills in Johnson's Corner but I have not tried them. So this is my take on the Gunsmoke: yes there are many unhealthy choices on the menu. However, they actually have a good chef salad and you can get a meal and not have sausage, gravy or fries. In addition, the food is freshly prepared by experienced cooks, because I have seen them work. I always sit at the counter, and they take pride in their cooking and always watch to see if the customers enjoy their food. So yes, it is diner style food but it's good. I will continue to stop there for a late lunch or a pick me up during a long work day.

On the way to our mountain cabin, we don't stop anywhere else for chow - breakfast, lunch or dinner. Must try the homemade coconut cream pie, clam chowder (many of the soups are delicious), pecan stuffed pancakes, and sliders.

GREAT breakfast! I regularly drive between Denver and the Four Corners and I've past by the Gunsmoke Cafe in Johnson Village for years and never stopped.... my Bad! It's a great place for breakfast. I had eggs, hash browns and toast with a side of green chili. It was exactly what I needed. The green chili tasted homemade and had a nice mild burn. The coffee was good and plentiful. The service was efficient and straight-forward. Not fancy place, but a definite "breakfast oasis" on Hwy 285.

so yeah, it is a dirty grungy truck stop. However, in the right situation it can be heaven. That situation for me has always been drunk around midnight and I stumble in (out of a car with a DD) to get the Mr. Ed. $7 for four biscuits covered with has browns, a block of shredded cheddar cheese, and white gravy with I don't even remember what else.... I don't know how it tastes sober, but drunk it is delich.

Growing up with a houseboat kept on Blue Mesa Lake [in Gunnison!], I have stopped here millions of times in route to Gunnison from Denver. In those millions of stops, i have enjoyed every single of one of them! -AWESOME breakfast. served all day long and perfect cafe style breakfast with heaping piles of pancakes, hashbrowns and eggs made to perfection. -crazy decor. this place has everything on the walls from animal heads to old western photos from the 1800's. -nice & friendly staff. i'm always greeted with a smile and leave satisfied. -the attached shop next door has just about everything. in realized my bf's car had nothing but a cassette player [um, circa 1997 eh?] we filled up with gas, and to our surprise found cassettes for sale for $1. ha :) the only downside? -a two stall bathroom doesn't do anyone favors. in just pulling over to pee...12 women stood before. lame.

The cafe's a bright red, trailer-like annex tucked behind the bright red gas station, with western decor and a good solid menu. Between the 3 of us, we ordered a breakfast of 2 omelets and 2 eggs/French toast/bacon. Everything came as we ordered, portions were generous, and all tasted as good as we'd hope for--what more can you want in a breakfast? Our waitress was friendly, quick to refill our coffee, and quick to bring the food; she cheerfully accepted requested substitutions and filled our orders accurately. Would we come again? Dang right!

This place isn't that bad for being a tiny dive of a truck-stop eatery. It's connected to a dusty gas station convenience store that still sells cassette tapes. The inside of the cafe is kind of grungy looking, but it's clean. The one waitress that worked here was nice, but she wasn't very attentive. It took ages before we could get a refill or the tab for that matter. The food is definitely no-frills. I had ordered the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn. It came with a house salad. Since I'm also a glutton, I ordered pancakes. Something has to maintain that junk in the trunk. The salad that came with my meal was a basic, bagged iceberg lettuce mix with ranch dressing. Nothing spectacular. The chicken fried chicken was delicious and so was the gravy that topped it. However, the mashed potatoes tasted off. I'm not sure what they seasoned the potatoes with, but it had a bitter taste and after two forkfuls, I just ate around it. The pancakes were good the first few bites and then it started to taste like the syrup had gone bad once it started cooling down. It was quite heartbreaking since I was really craving some pancakes. I just don't think it was meant to be. If I ever travel through these parts again, I'd definitely stop by to sample their other offerings.

If you're in the area for any reason, you'd do yourself a disservice to pass up the legendary site known as "The Gunsmoke Cafe." And if you go to "The Gunsmoke Cafe", you'd still do yourself a disservice to not order "The Mr. Ed" and finish it up with a Cinnamon Roll a la mode (yes, with ice cream). To make a Mr Ed: 2 biscuits, halved; hash browns; cheese; 4 eggs; drenched in sausage gravy and green chile. No kidding around with this one, kiddos - this is the genuine article, and the most delicious thing you've ever tasted. Once you've completed the task of eating an entire "Mr. Ed", you'll join a hallowed and honored status among men, and can hold your head high because you have proven yourself 'all that is man' - or woman, if you're a woman.
